TODAY’S AI: TOMORROW’S AGI

As AI systems steadily improve, all humans have a responsibility to increase their awareness of the importance and evolution of AIs development. There are many domains of awareness, for example the potential implications of language, recognition of the roles that the cultural and legal worlds play, and an acute perception of our own unintended contributing risk factors.

To date, what are some notable realizations in the development of AI systems that we should consider in the context of an eventual AGI?

Technologies from harnessing fire to the printing press to a modern smart phone all represent individual links in the chain of tools created by humans to solve our most vexing problems. In a sense, all technology amplifies human potential, and nothing has the power to amplify our potential as much as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

For better or worse, life is a series of inevitable problems and one view on the meaning of life is to try to make the set of life’s problems as ‘good’ as possible. The more we can enable AI tools to help us in this goal, the more we can naturally focus on a better set of problems both at individual and societal levels.
